Orangeries Crafted as Though They Have Always Been There

Heritage Builds

When a house is listed or sits within a conservation area, an orangery must do far more than simply comply — it must belong. At Malbrook we specialise in creating classical orangeries that appear as though they have always formed part of the original estate.

Every heritage project begins with meticulous historical research. We study estate plans, period pattern books, and surviving 18th- and 19th-century joinery details from the same architect or era. Proportions, column depths, cornice profiles, lantern geometry and glazing bar patterns are drawn directly from these authentic sources.

We routinely secure consent for additions that others consider impossible — from Grade I manor houses to Georgian townhouses and Arts & Crafts villas — because our submissions are founded on scholarship rather than guesswork. Conservation officers recognise and trust the language of the period rendered with absolute precision.

Traditional construction methods are employed without compromise: deep insulated columns concealing structural steel, pegged mortise-and-tenon frames, hand-run mouldings, cylinder-blown or crown glass where appropriate, and roofs finished in hand-made clay peg tiles or natural slate laid to diminishing courses beneath discreet leadwork.

The result is never a pastiche, but a quiet, confident addition that respects the past while delivering the light, warmth and comfort expected of a 21st-century living space. Future generations will struggle to tell where the original house ends and the Malbrook orangery begins.
