Joinery FAQs

Answers to our most frequently asked questions

What types of joinery do you specialise in?

We design and handcraft the full spectrum of architectural joinery: entrance doors, bespoke staircases, sash and casement windows, internal doors and screens, panelling, architraves, skirtings, conservatories, orangeries, garden rooms and all associated decorative mouldings.

Do you make traditional timber sash windows?

Yes. We are specialists in period-correct box sash windows with traditional weights and cords, slim double-glazed units, and authentic detailing. All our sashes meet current building regulations and are suitable for listed buildings and conservation areas when required.

Can you replicate existing period joinery exactly?

Absolutely. We regularly survey and reproduce Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian joinery to match original profiles, mouldings and construction methods. We work closely with conservation officers and have extensive experience on Grade I and Grade II listed properties.

What timbers do you use?

We primarily work with American White Oak, American Black Walnut, and Yellow Poplar (Tulipwood) for internal work. All timber is responsibly sourced (FSC or PEFC) and selected for stability and beauty.

Are your windows and doors energy efficient?

Yes. We manufacture our own sealed double-glazed (or triple-glazed) units with low-E coatings and argon filling. U-values typically range from 1.2–1.4 W/m²K for windows and 1.0–1.4 W/m²K for doors, comfortably exceeding Part L requirements.

Do you supply and fit ironmongery?

We offer a complete ironmongery service – from traditional brass or bronze for period properties to contemporary stainless steel or blackened bronze. Some locks are multi-point, insurance-approved.

How long does a staircase project take?

From survey to installation, a bespoke staircase typically takes 10–16 weeks. Design and approval drawings 3–4 weeks, workshop construction 6–8 weeks, and on-site installation 1–2 weeks depending on complexity.

Do you undertake full building contracts for orangeries and garden rooms?

Yes. We manage the entire project from foundations and structural steelwork through to glazing, roofing, underfloor heating, electrics and decoration – delivering a fully finished, turnkey building with the same exacting joinery standards throughout.

What is the best way to begin a joinery project?

Simply contact us to arrange an initial consultation. We’ll visit your property (or discuss remotely), take detailed measurements, understand your vision and provide guidance on styles, materials, budgets and timelines before preparing a comprehensive proposal.
